Earth Overshoot Day marks the day when humanity has used up all the natural resources that the Earth can restore and provide within one year. From that day on, humanity lives beyond its means from an ecological perspective. In 2022, Earth Overshoot Day falls on July 28.
The international sustainability organization Global Footprint Network calculates the earth's biocapacity, i.e. its ability to regenerate used resources and break down pollutants. The biocapacity is then compared with the global ecological footprint.

There are many solutions to influence Earth Overshoot Day.
By expanding renewable energies, for example, Earth Overshoot Day could be postponed by 26 days if at least 75 percent of electricity were generated by renewable energies. Worldwide, the figure is currently only 39 percent.
Earth Overshoot Day could be postponed by 29 days if existing technologies for buildings, industrial processes and electricity distribution were better used to develop smart cities.

PV systems can be integrated into the charging processes of electric vehicles without much effort.
